| DEFβ4

DEFβ4 (Defensin Beta 4) is a small antimicrobial peptide belonging to the defensin family that plays a crucial role in host immune defense. Comprising approximately 64 amino acids, DEFβ4 contains three disulfide bonds that stabilize its characteristic β-sheet structure. The peptide features an N-terminal signal sequence, with the mature peptide being secreted extracellularly following signal peptide cleavage. Diseases associated with DEFβ4 include oral candidiasis and urethritis. Its related pathways encompass bacterial infections in CF airways and defensin-mediated immunity. DEFB4B represents an important paralog of this gene.
