The complement fragment C3c consists of three polypeptide chains: the C3c β-chain (residues 23-667), C3c α-chain fragment 1 (residues 749-954), and C3c α-chain fragment 2 (residues 1321-1663), which are interconnected through disulfide bonds. As a central component of both complement activation pathways, C3c undergoes specific proteolytic cleavage to form C3 convertase. The cleavage of C3 releases C3a and C3b fragments, with the latter serving as a key component of the alternative C3 convertase. Circulating C3 levels may become significantly reduced either due to decreased synthesis or increased consumption during complement activation.
