N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP or BNPT) is a precursor to an N-terminal inactive protein with 76 amino acids, which is cleaved from the molecule as brain natriuretic peptide. Blood levels of both BNP and NT-proBNP can be used to screen for, and diagnose, acute congestive heart failure (CHF) and can be used to determine the prognosis of heart failure, as both markers are usually higher in patients with a poorer prognosis. Plasma concentrations are also usually increased in patients with asymptomatic or symptomatic left ventricular dysfunction and are associated with coronary artery disease and myocardial ischemia.| Typical data
