Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), also known as tyrosine 3-monooxygenase, is the enzyme responsible for catalyzing the conversion of the amino acid L-tyrosine to L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA). It utilizes molecular oxygen (O2) and cofactors such as iron (Fe2+) and tetrahydrobiopterin. L-DOPA is a precursor to dopamine, which in turn is a precursor to the important neurotransmitters norepinephrine and epinephrine. This enzyme catalyzes the rate-limiting step in the synthesis of these catecholamines. The enzyme is encoded by the TH gene and is found in the central nervous system (CNS), peripheral sympathetic neurons, and adrenal medulla.| Typical data
