Procollagen Type III N-Terminal Peptide (PIIIP) is a crucial biomarker for assessing liver fibrosis, with its serum levels reflecting hepatic collagen metabolism and liver function. The intact PIIIP is primarily cleared through receptor-mediated endocytosis by hepatic sinusoidal endothelial cells, while smaller fragments are eliminated via renal excretion. Elevated serum PIIIP concentrations indicate active fibrogenesis and impaired hepatic clearance capacity, correlating significantly with the degree of hepatocyte necrosis, portal inflammation, and progressive fibrotic changes in chronic liver diseases.
