Hepatitis B virus pre-S1 antigen (HBsAg pre-S1) is a key component of HBV's outer envelope, present on intact viral particles and critical for infection and replication. The HBV envelope contains three proteins: S, pre-S2, and pre-S1.The pre-S1 protein mediates viral attachment to liver cells via its AA 21-47 region - even mutated HBV remains infectious if this segment is intact. Pre-S1 proteins are found mainly in Dane particles and filamentous forms.
