The rabies virus N protein gene is 1424 nucleotides long, with a relatively constant sequence and few point mutations, which is the main basis for genotyping of rabies viruses.Phosphorylation of the N protein regulates viral transcription and replication; it binds to genomic RNA and protects the viral RNA from nuclease damage; and it is also a major component of the helically symmetric structure of the nucleocapsid in the mature virus particles.In mature viral particles, the N protein is also a major component of the helically symmetric structure of the capsid.
