| SSB

La/SSB antigen, also known as SSB/La, is a highly conserved phosphorylated protein within the cell nucleus. It is closely related to the previously mentioned SSB antigen but constitutes an independent entity in terms of molecular structure and function. Within the nucleus, SSB (Ro60) and SSB (La) are functionally interdependent. As a transcription termination factor, the La protein is responsible for receiving primary transcripts produced by RNA polymerase III, including Y RNAs bound to Ro60. Thus, SSB/Ro60-SSB/La forms a functionally interconnected unit in the RNA quality control pathway. This may explain why autoantibodies targeting them coexist so closely in serological studies.
